The Challenge of Going Digital by Gerardo Valazza

With an increasing number of digital resources available, how do we make the right choice for our students and ourselves? How much technology should we integrate into our lessons, or rather, beyond our lessons and the four walls of the classroom? During this presentation we will discuss the role technology plays today and look at several examples to illustrate an informed approach to going digital that enables us to extend our comfort zone and develop as professional teachers.

Exams, Sustainable Assessment and Learner Autonomy (Anglo De la Costa)

It is sometimes argued that exams can have a negative impact on courses because they promote assessment “of” learning instead of assessment “for” learning, leading to teachers and learners working on test-taking skills rather than focusing on developing effective language learning skills. We do not think that this is necessarily true. On the contrary, we believe that if used appropriately, exams can not only be used for formative purposes but also to promote sustainable lifelong learning skills. We would like to propose moving beyond the summative vs. formative distinction and considering the potential of assessment “as” learning, also known as sustainable assessment. It means adopting a transformation model of learning in which learners choose their own learning pathways and become more autonomous. Not easy at all, but certainly worthwhile trying!
